Title:
“History Repeating!? – Do we get it right this time?”
Abstract:
IoT is not really a new idea as Marc Weiser more than 20 years ago pointed out its key characteristics in his Scientific American article on ubiquitous computing while Kevin Ashton coined the term IoT in the context of advanced RFIDs. However, we all agree that today due to cost reduction, further miniaturization, and the overall availability of (wireless) communication infrastructures IoT seems to enter our every day’s life – at home, in the office, in factories and even more and more in safety and security critical appliances. We also all agree that IoT is “more complex” compared to the classical Internet if we consider complexity as a function of number of nodes, degree of interconnectivity, topology, and communication patterns. Do we have everything under control regarding safety and security in the classical Internet with its routers, backbones, protocols, clients etc.? The answer is clearly no considering the manifold attacks, vulnerabilities, and weaknesses. And now we introduce smart “things” with full connectivity to the Internet running basically the same or similar protocols – and additionally we want to use them in safety and security critical systems. As we have many theoretical and real frameworks targeting the security of interconnected devices, the biggest challenges today are not so much technical problems as they are matters of awareness – know what you do before you introduce IoT in safety and security critical systems! Otherwise history is repeating and we will (again) enter the permanent fight of patches and updates vs. abuse and attacks. Unfortunately, right now there is no strong business case for manufacturers to add a ubiquitous security element into the development process – it is up to the professional consumers in safety critical environments to call for sound standards and guaranteed common security settings.
Bio:
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochen H. Schiller ([email protected]) is head of the working group Computer Systems & Telematics at the Institute of Computer Science, Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany, director of the Research Forum on Public Safety and Security at Freie Universitaet Berlin and director of the Innovation Center on Public Safety and Security at Fraunhofer FOKUS.
Dr. Schiller studied Computer Science at the University of Karlsruhe where he also got his PhD in 1996 (summa cum laude). Afterwards he joined Uppsala University, Sweden, for teaching and cooperating in several research projects. After being a guest professor at ETS Montreal, Canada, and Kiel University, Germany, Dr. Schiller got his habilitation and published the book “Mobile Communications” that is currently used by over 300 universities as text book. Since April 2001 he is full professor at the Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany, and from 2003 to 2007 Dr. Schiller was Dean of the Department for Mathematics and Computer Science. From 2007 until 2010 he was Vice President of the Freie Universitaet Berlin.
His research focus is on wireless, mobile, and embedded devices, communication protocols, and security of and with the help of communication systems. Up to now, Dr. Schiller published 5 books and more than 200 international papers. His book “Mobile Communications” is available in 6 languages.
